When we troubleshoot a pump, there can be two basic parts that can need our attention.
- It's either the Hydraulic pump end (the centrifugal pump itself)
- Or the Electrical motor end (the prime mover, most of the time an electric motor)
Pump will not start or run :
*Most of the time, it will be on the motor side
Pump end :
- Clogged impeller - Impeller could be clogged and prevent it to turn.
- Does the motor have power and does it run ?
- Improperly wired ?
- Blown fuse or circuit breaker ?
- Loose or broken wire ?
- Short in the motor ?
Pump leaks
Pump End
- Pump leak around the shaft cause by a worn shaft seal - Need mechanical seal replacement
- Face gasket leak, where it's leaking around the bolts
- Volute casing is cracked and have leak - Because the pump overheated or freeze
Motor End
- Bent shaft (rare)
Pump is pumping very little water
*Will be on the pump side, not so much on the motor side
Pump End
- Not Primed - A pump cannot pump air, so fill not just the jump but also the suction line
- Leak in suction line
- Clogged impeller
- Foot valve clogged (A foot valve is a check valve with a strainer situated on the suction line - In case of the liquid being pump is situated below the pump, so the line doesn't empty itself when then pump stop.

Mechanical seal precautions :
- Dip seal in water to lubricate before assembling
- Do not touch seal faces with your hands
- Dust particles or dirt on the faces of this seal injure it permanently, causing it to leak after assembly
